GOD IS MY REFUGE
Bible in A Year: Exodus 11, Exodus 12; Matthew 27:11-44; Psalm 21:1-7
“He asked life of you and you gave it to him, even length of days forever and ever.”
Psalm 21:4 WEB
It happened 34 years ago, but it is an experience I will never forget. I was about 16 years old and I was working for my people. One day, my five friends and I went to villages located in the flat land for work-related purposes. On our way in the middle of the mountains, I got sick unexpectedly. My friends waited for me for three days. But, the sickness did not subside. They told me, “Younger brother, be alert! be cautious! We can’t wait for you anymore.” They left me and went to the plain region. Then, it got really hot. My head was throbbing like it would split. I felt stabbing aches along every inch of my body. If I tried to lift up my head, dizziness took over, spinning everything around me. I really craved some warm tea. But, there was no one around. I was alone in the big mountains, far from villages and people. Soon the sun set and I became very afraid. I knew some dead soldiers were buried nearby. I was not a believer in Jesus Christ back then. I lay there and many deep thoughts entered my mind. A question popped up in my head, “Who created everything you see around here?” An answer came, “the God in whom your parents believed created all that you see.” I mustered up some energy, got up, and said a brief prayer, “God, help me. If you don’t help me, no one will help me.” Twenty minutes later, I heard footsteps coming from behind, so I turned around and looked. I saw some people returning after selling cows, along with my three friends. It was near dusk, so they spent the night with me. Among the people was an older lady, who asked me, “Son, were you left here alone?” I answered, “Yes, because my friends had to go on for duties.” She touched me and knew I was running a high fever. She started the fire and made some hot tea for me and gave me medicine. I fell asleep. Morning came and my illness was gone. I felt God was near; He answered my prayer and gave me life.
Reflection
Jesus said to the man with leprosy, “I am willing…be clean!” (Matthew 8:3). Jesus was willing and I was healed. Are you facing hardship or illness? Where is your refuge?
Prayer
God, please help us remember that our refuge is in You when we face afflictions in this world. In Jesus’ Name we pray. Amen.
