REGARD

Bible in a Year: Leviticus 7:11-38, Leviticus 8; Mark 11:1-27; Psalms 28

“Because they don’t respect the works of Yahweh, nor the operation of his hands, he will break them down and not build them up.”
Psalm 28:5  WEB

Regard often means respect and admiration. Regard or respect is very important in our lives. It lifts us up and brings us blessings. For our Karen people, parents and teachers instruct us to show regard or respect to the leaders and the elders; we are taught to bend or bow slightly when walking in front of them. This is an important habit we inherit from our parents and teachers.  Regard or respect exhibits (1) homage, (2) honor, (3) reverence, (4) values, (5) blessings, and (6) love.

Romans 13:1-7 teaches us to show regard or respect to the governing authorities permitted by God. He grants authority to the government and administration for the good of the citizens. God also holds those leaders accountable to honor him with the authority he gives them. As such, the citizens have the duty to submit to the government. For if God did not endow the rulers with power, they would not have existed.  We are also to pray for the authorities to rule with integrity and justice.

Reflection

The scripture teaches us to show regard or respect to the governing authorities. Do I let myself be subject to the governing authorities? How do I remind myself that God grants them power for the good of the citizens?

Prayer

Dear God, please teach us and help us to know how to show regard or respect to our parents, teachers, elders, and government in Christ.
In Jesus’ Name we pray. Amen.
