THE COST OF DISOBEDIENCE

Bible in A Year: Genesis 2:18-25, Genesis 3, Genesis 4:1-16; Matthew 2:1-18;
Psalm 2:1-12

“but you shall not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil; for in the day that you eat of it, you will surely die.”
Genesis 2:17  WEB

The scriptures we read today remind us that God loves us immensely. God also wants to know how much we obey Him and love Him back. In the Garden of Eden the Lord God commanded Adam and Eve saying, “You may freely eat of every tree of the garden; but you shall not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil; for in the day that you eat of it, you will surely die” (Genesis 2:16-17). However, man disobeyed God and sinned. The disobedience came at a high-priced cost. We read in Genesis 3:14, “Yahweh God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, you are cursed above all livestock, and above every animal of the field. You shall go on your belly and you shall eat dust all the days of your life.” We also read in Genesis 3:16, “To the woman he said, “I will greatly multiply your pain in childbirth. You will bear children in pain. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.” To the man, Genesis 3:17 says, “Because you have listened to your wife’s voice, and have eaten from the tree, about which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ the ground is cursed for your sake. You will eat from it with much labor all the days of your life.”

Disobedience has a cost. Disobedience can happen in a split-second, but the consequences can be a very high cost that lasts endlessly and harms many. Some of the costs of disobedience can be hardship, worries, confusion, conflicts, losses, regrets, destructions, and even death. As God’s children, let us obey God and let Him direct our path. Christ is the one who paid for the cost of our sin.

Reflection

Whose child are you? Whose voice do you obey today?

Prayer

God, please forgive my weaknesses and direct my life, so I will obey you and abide by your will. Please use me as a small vessel for You. In Jesus’ Name I pray.  Amen.
