BOUNTIFUL HARVESTING

My friends in Bakersfield have been blessing me with the fruits and vegetables from their gardens. They started planting early so I am already making vegetable curries and talapaw, a Karen stew, with pumpkin, gourd, okra, eggplant, tomatoes and basil. I was happy to return their favor with Damson plums, pomegranates, lemongrass and mint from my garden.
The abundance and varieties of fruits and vegetables remind me of the diversity of God’s creation of the human family. We are an immense family of many different kinds of people and we flower and fruit in different ways. We are special and flavorful in our own unique ways. Yet all of us together are God’s children and part of the family of Jesus. When we look at someone very different from us in skin color and face and see a sister or brother and accept her or him unconditionally, that is the bountiful harvest we bring to God.
Reflection
Do we try to expand our family circle and be accepting and open to different kinds of people? Do we provide hospitality to all regardless of their differences from us?
Prayer
Dear God, teach us to open our hearts and minds to move beyond exclusion to inclusion. Make us more loving of all God’s children, loving and accepting them as you love and accept each one of us. In Jesus’ Name I pray. Amen.
