GOD IS ON MY SIDE
AMONG MY HELPERS

Bible in A Year: Numbers 22:21-41, Numbers 23:1-26; Luke 6:37-49,
Luke 7:1-10; Psalm 37:32-40

“How shall I curse whom God has not cursed?
How shall I defy whom Yahweh has not defied?”
Numbers 23:8  WEB

When we read about Balaam, one of God’s prophet (Numbers 22:21-41), he is a medium between man and God. Even when he was forced or pressured, he followed God’s will and blessed His people, the Israelites. The story began when the princes of Moab came to get Balaam to follow them in order to go and curse the Israelites. When he went with them, an Angel of the Lord stood in the way with His drawn sword. The donkey saw the angel and refrained from advancing three times, thus he struck the donkey three times. God opened the mouth of the donkey and she said, “What have I done to you, that you have struck me three times?…“Am I not your donkey, on which you have ridden all your life long until today? Was I ever in the habit of doing so to you?”” and he answered “No.” Then God opened Balaam’s eyes and he saw the angel. The angel said to him “Unless she had turned away from me, surely now I would have killed you,” and God instructed him to say only what He told him to say. He went to meet with Balak and had him prepare offerings. There God met with him and told him to speak as he was told (Numbers 23:1-26). In Numbers 23:8, he said, “How shall I curse whom God has not cursed? How shall I defy whom Yahweh has not defied?” Balak asked, “What have you done to me? I took you to curse my enemies, and behold, you have blessed them altogether.” Thus, we can see that God fulfilled the promise He made to His children  and His people that He had chosen. Others may curse and plot against them but God will protect them from such things. For example, one of the Burmese junta government officials said, “Knowledge of the Karen people shall become something only available in museums.” However, God protected us and delivered us to spread far and wide to many countries across the world to let everyone witness His authority. Thus, Psalms 118:7 says, “The Lord is for me among those who help me; Therefore I shall see my desire on those who hate me.”

Reflection

Balaam was exempted from certain death through the talking donkey. Have you experienced escaping from something due to God’s miraculous work or have you encountered someone with a similar experience? Share God’s miraculous deeds.

Prayer

Dear God, thank you for being among those who help us. In Jesus’ Name we pray. Amen.
