My name is Naw Kanyaw Htoo and I am the first child of my parents. Growing up as a Christian, I wanted to study theology. When I asked my parents for permission to pursue theological education, they agreed. After graduating from college I decided to enroll in the Master of Divinity (M Div.) program at Myanmar Institute of Theology. This degree program is a full-time program.
I was so excited and eager to learn theology in the M. Div program. The first year went smoothly because my father paid full tuition fees for the whole year. I had no problem studying without financial stress. The problem started in the second year because I did not have enough money to pay for the tuition fees. I thought I had enough savings of my own to pay for it. But I was wrong. The little savings that I had was gone already by the end of first year. Attending seminary in Myanmar was not that cheap either. The tuition fee is not that expensive, but there are so many things you need to pay for at school, such as activities, books, food, clothing, etc. Besides, there are not many job opportunities to work part time in Myanmar. My younger brother paid for my utility bills so I managed to save little by little for the tuition fees. The first semester of my second year was fine with my brother’s help. But then I started to worry. How about next semester? How about next year? How about the final year? I did not want to ask for money from anyone including my parents. How can an adult daughter be asking for her own tuition fees from her retired parents? It would be so embarrassing.
I was so stressed out and depressed that I was thinking of withdrawing from the school. I could not concentrate on my study and I was not happy with my decision to study theology anymore. I regretted it. I thought I had made a big mistake. At that very moment, one thing came into my mind. Before we registered, we had to take a written entrance examination, medical checkup, followed by an interview. When I was interviewed, the interviewer asked me who would pay for my tuition fees. With confidence I quickly answered, “My parents, but God is my sponsor.” What? “God is my sponsor?” Did I really answer that way? Right there and then I told myself, “No way, I will not quit because of financial problems.
I have to stand on my own word. I have to show God that I trust Him. When God is my sponsor, what shall I be afraid of?” From that very moment, tuition fee was no longer my focus of stress anymore. I was free. I was happy again in my study. Finally, in short, I graduated and received the Master of Divinity degree by the Grace of God and the blessings from my family.

PRAYER FOR THE READER
Dear God, please bless Your children reading this devotional journal. I pray for hope when they are facing financial hardship. Especially, I pray that they will speak truthful, life-building words to others as well as to themselves. Let Your Holy Spirit bring alive Your word in their hearts and their lives and the power that comes with it. Help us to remember You are our Father, our Mother, and our Helper, our Provider, our Guide, and our Shepherd. In Your sight, we are more valuable than the birds of the sky and the lilies of the field. Teach us to trust in You when we say we Believe in You. Comfort your children by Your grace. In Jesus’ Name, I pray. Amen.
