Week 6
The Value of Prayer
John 14:13-14 – “Whatever you will ask in my name, I will do it, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you will ask anything in my name, I will do it.” (WEB)
I pray to God every day and night. If I don’t pray, I feel that something is missing. When I don’t pray, I feel that the gate of blessings is shut and it is a difficult place for me. During the past month, my old mother and all my siblings were sick with COVID-19. I got overwhelmed with worries for my family members. By God’s grace, they all recovered because of my prayers and the prayers of pastors and friends. Since I know from experience that God answers my prayers, I have a secure hiding place and the power that comes through God’s grace. Without prayers, it would be unimaginable how insecure my life would be. It is very sad that people do not know the God Who wants to answer our prayers and fail to appreciate the privilege of praying to God.
I remember a time when I took the process theology class in my Bible school. This class was popular as the teacher and his teaching style were well-liked. I learned that process theologians believe that prayer is only therapy for those suffering from religious extremism. I am not a religious extremist. I asked a lot from God and I received a lot.
I also remember a time when I took a driving lesson from an American white man about 65 years old. He sat next to me and sneezed. Because I was busy concentrating on my driving, I forgot to say, “God bless you!” as people customarily do. I later told him, “I am sorry I forgot to say God bless you.” He replied, “You don’t need to tell me God bless me. I don’t believe in God. God is not in me. I only believe I will die after I live. That’s it.” I tried to tell him that although he doesn’t believe in God, my God Who can bless me can surely bless him. I told him to accept the blessing and he did.
Often we are able to receive blessings. But, we are not able to receive or believe in the God Who blesses us. Because we believe God is the God of blessings, we pray and He listens to us. This is a strange concept for unbelievers. God answers many of my prayers. When there were illnesses, I received healing; when there were worries, I received peace; when there were conflicts, I received reconciliation. Those who ask in the Name of the Lord will receive answers that God thinks are good for us. May we try to be a good model that reflects the character of the omnipotent God of blessings. May we continually fellowship with Him in prayer. May we praise the God Who desires to have a relationship with us and answer our prayers.

God has commanded us to pray. Jesus prayed regularly and also taught us how to pray.
Martin Luther said, “To be a Christian without prayer is no more possible than to be alive without breathing.”
In the words of Corrie ten Boom, “Is prayer your steering wheel or your spare tire?”

Dear God, please bless Your children reading this devotional journal. Please strengthen their prayer life. We know that prayer is the avenue through which you keep our paths straight and empower us. Help them to pray in both adversity and prosperity so they will not become weak in their faith or proud in their riches. May they never take for granted the privilege of praying to You. May their prayers change them to be more like You each day. In Jesus’ Name, I pray. Amen.
