Week 35

THE LIGHT AND THE LAMP DELIVERED ME

Psalm 119:105 – “Your word is a light to my feet, and a lamp for my path.” (WEB)

In 1996, after graduating from the Bible school, I visited Thailand. I came back to Burma in the same year. There were five of us that came back home together. After crossing the river and reaching the riverbank on the side of Myawaddy town, the Burmese immigration officers arrested us and told us that we re-entered the country illegally. They took us to the immigration office and we were interrogated there. When it got dark, they took us to Thin Gan Nyi Naung interrogation center. Although there were five of us, the interrogator did not question others. He only grilled me. He questioned me three times a day: 9 PM in the morning, midnight, and 4 AM in the morning. He did not let me sleep. Every time the two worrisome questions that he repeatedly asked among other questions were:

  1. When you went to Thailand did you meet with Karen soldiers?
  2. When you were in Thailand, did you go to a refugee camp?

The truth was I travelled with the Karen soldiers and I also went to a refugee camp. But, I did not give those answers. I answered all of his questions with lies. If I answered truthfully, I knew I would be in big trouble. The strange thing is that I have never been someone who is eloquent and I have never known how to lie. I believe I had help in the words I spoke. Matthew 10:19 – “But when they deliver you up, don’t be anxious about how or what you will say, for it will be given you in that hour what you will say.”

One morning when he interrogated me, it was apparent he did not believe what I said. He started searching my backpack and found a Bible, a hymn book, and the book in which I wrote my sermons. He asked me, “What are those?”  I told him those are Bible, hymnal book, and my sermon notebook. He left me for 20 minutes. When he came back, he brought back a young Karen man. He asked one of my friends to read my writing and the young Karen man to interpret it into Burmese. After two or three pages were read, he knew it was about religion. He picked up the phone and called the immigration office. He told them, “The one you detained is not a bad person. He is a pastor.” He asked me to wait. After 30 minutes, he came back with a car and told me, “This vehicle is number 35 used by the interrogators. Give them 600 kyats. They will take you right to your house. Other vehicles will have to go through checkpoints and answer questions. But, not this one!”

Just as he said, I got home without a hitch. Psalm 121:7-8 says, “The Lord will keep you from all harm—he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.”

REFLECT

Pastor Kar Min was literally saved by the Word of God. On paper, stones, or our hearts, the Word of God is absolutely perfect and powerful. The Word of God also calls for a response because it wants to be the light to our feet and a lamp for our path. The salvation of Jesus Christ is continually saving us in the past, in the present, and in the future.

Where do you keep the Word of God? What is the Word of God saying to you today?
How will you respond?

PRAYER FOR THE READER

Dear God, please bless Your children reading this devotional journal. Thank you for the love letter you wrote to us. Your word is the truth filled with loving promises, generous grace, and mighty power. Please grow in their hearts the love for Your word. May they discern Your will for them as they immerse themselves in Your Loving word. May they allow Your word to light their path and make it straight. May they never take for granted the gift of Your word. May they cherish it and allow it to come alive in their lives. In Jesus’ Name, I pray. Amen.
