Week 22

THE LORD ANSWERED MY PRAYER AND DELIVERED ME

Psalm 118:5 – “In my distress I prayed to the Lord, and the Lord answered me and set me free.” (NLT)

February 23, 1997 was a day of volatility in my country when the enemy advanced in masses to invade our village and homes. We were caught off guard. The battles raged and the villagers had to flee into the jungle. When the enemy reached our village, my husband was away from home visiting his parents in another village. I was home with my two children unaware of the lurking danger. Then, people came and told me, “What are you going to do? People in other villages have already fled. The Burmese will reach our village any moment. Your husband can’t come home. The Burmese already blocked the roads. He can’t come back.” I had no clue what to do. I felt the distress intensely. I looked at my children, one was six months old and the other was three years old. One of my brothers also came to tell me, “People already took some food and items into the jungle. Nobody dares to sleep in the village tonight. The Burmese are too close.” I gathered a mat, some clothes, and a blanket. I put them in the bag and carried it on my back. Carrying my six-month-old baby close to my heart, I held my three-year-old’s hand as it was hard for him to tread the jungle path. When we reached our hiding place, people began to cook and prepare a place to sleep. I, on the other hand, did not quite know what to do. But, for the sake of my children I cleaned up the space around a bamboo bush and laid out the mat for the three of us to sleep. Sadly, we were not able to bring any food with us. We ate others’ food here and there.

One night when we were sleeping, a missile exploded very close to us around midnight. In the dark, we were told to move to another location. I thought to myself, “How am I going to move again with two small kids on a pitch-dark night.” Somehow I got up, carried my bag and my children, and followed others. With deep fear and worries, I prayed to God in tears. I prayed that my children would be healthy. I also prayed for my husband and the chance for us to reunite. In the morning, we were told, “You need to move onward and go into Thailand. You cannot go back to your village. The enemy in great numbers already seized our village. Let’s move!” I was filled with anxiety hearing this news. How is my three-year-old going to hike up a big mountain? At night, I opened my Bible and read Psalm 46:1 and 118:5, which encouraged my heart a little. I started praying day and night. When people were resting or cooking in the jungle, I took my two children and prayed hard under the shade of a tree. The next morning, we were told once again to go to Thailand. The plan was to start climbing the big mountain at 6 AM and descend to the foot of the mountain on the other side by 9 AM. I was terrified. How are my kids going to climb the mountain? I didn’t know what to think anymore. But, when we started climbing the mountain, I found friends who helped take care of my older child. Once we got to Thailand, my husband found us and we reunited. I was grateful for the grace of God. In distress, I prayed to the Lord and He answered my prayer and delivered me. I regained the strength from God and friends who helped us on that arduous trip that lasted more than one month to escape to a refugee camp.

REFLECT

It is hard to imagine having to flee from those after you to destroy you, your children, and your entire race. While we may not have to run from people trying to kill us, distress in life does come to us.  What are the causes of your distress? Is it the injustice perpetrated against you?
Is it your own disobedience? What are your typical reactions to distress?
To whom do you run to first for help? How do you usually overcome distress?

Adversity can be redemptive, not just punitive. No matter what causes your distress, if you are willing to cry out to the God Who died for you, He will surely answer your prayer and deliver you.

PRAYER FOR THE READER

Dear God, please bless Your children reading this devotional journal. I pray Your healing presence will be with them wherever they are. With your mercy, please teach them to cast their burden on You and lighten the weight on their shoulders. Fill their hearts with strength, courage, and hope. Wipe away their tears and hastily bring a joyful day they have been waiting for. You are the Savior full of compassion and grace. May they be reminded of Your ever-presence with them and that You will not allow them to fall, but let them see Your salvation.  Transform their experience into a testimony for Your glory. In Jesus’ Name I pray. Amen.
