PILLAR OF SHAME

Hebrews 12:2 – “Looking to Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising its shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (WEB)

After Sunday’s worship service, I went to Hong Kong University to see the “Pillar of Shame.” The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) demanded it be removed from the campus or face destruction. This Pillar of Shame is one of the last remaining reminders of the mass killings at Tiananmen Square. It was created by Danish sculptor Jens Galschiot. The twisted and torn bodies of the 50 figures are sculpted to depict those who died because of the government repression. The words “The Tiananmen Massacre,” “June 4, 1989,” and “The old can’t kill the young forever” are inscribed on the base in both English and Chinese. After the National Security Law was imposed in Hong Kong, books and symbols for democracy and freedom were removed from the library and public. The CCP has been attempting to erase memories of evil crimes in the past. Out of fear and unstable politics, thousands of Hong Kong citizens have left the country. Christian leaders are well aware of the changes and the freedom that is steadily slipping away.

This visit made me think about the Karen Revolution in 1949, the history of Karen then and now, and the ongoing bloodshed. Thousands of innocent people suffered and died because of the leadership of the vicious greedy and selfish dictators. Many lost their lives because of the kleptocrats and fascists. Many educated Karen, such as teachers, engineers, doctors, nurses, entrepreneurs, and so on were kicked out of their respective homelands. The corpses of God’s beloved, who shared the gospel and boldly carried the cross and finished their races, are the seeds that died and produced flowers and fruits. They are now scattered in different parts of the world. Karen Christians face the challenge of forgetting or documenting our true history as a result of the diaspora. Yes, Karen people may know and write our history through literature, poems, songs, culture, tradition, food, and so on. More than that, we can write our history without a pen. How? Write our history with our life (lifestyle, legacy)! Make wise decisions and live a godly life, so that the next generations after us can learn from us what it means to be faithful to God and follow Him wholeheartedly. Let our sweat, blood, dedication, and life brighten their eyes to see the power of the cross! May our footsteps on a narrow road direct them to the eternal home.

The Pillar of Shame also reminded me of Jesus on the cross, despised, disgraced, and disfigured. But the legacy of Jesus is redemption and liberation from sins — hatred, lust, pride, corruption, etc.  So, how do we carry on the legacy of Christ? Cultivate characters of God — forgiveness, humility, loving with sincerity, healing of the wounded, etc. Jesus can help us to live abundantly here and now on earth. Let us write a Karen Christian history with our life by living out God’s character and differentiating ourselves from the ‘world,’ and thereby carrying Christ’s legacy.

REFLECT

The Pillar of Shame reminded Thrah Saw Beh of widespread gross injustice perpetrated in Hong Kong, Myanmar, and other places. At the same time, Thrah Saw Beh saw the Pillar of Shame as an invitation to become the pilgrim of truth, justice, and peace, who leaves for this world the legacy of Christ. Accepting this invitation requires living a transformative life that reflects Christ’s characters. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

What does it mean to leave a legacy of Christ for you personally?
How are you showing characters of Christ in your home, church, workplace, and neighborhood?

PRAYER FOR THE READER

Dear God, please bless Your children reading this devotional journal. I pray they will care about the injustice in this world and want to make a difference. May they know a legacy is not about having many accomplishments to boast about one’s own glory, but leaving a godly imprint in the hearts and lives of future generations. Let your transformation in their lives be a force that propel them to live out Your character and leave Your legacy. In Jesus’ Name I pray. Amen.
