ARE WE PROCRASTINATING IN HELPTING THE NEEDY?

Psalm 82: 3-4 – “Defend the cause of the poor and the fatherless. Vindicate the oppressed and suffering. Rescue the poor and needy. Deliver them from the power of the wicked.” (NLT)

As a member of the Yangon Women Fellowship organization, my responsibilities include providing care and support for women who are poor,  or who have been abused, or are victims of human trafficking. I would like to share the story of Ma Phyu. Ma Phyu came from a village, 40 miles from Yangon. She had many siblings and only a second-grade education. When Ma Phyu’s father died, the family situation worsened. Ma Phyu’s mother soon remarried but he was a drunkard who would regularly beat them. Ma Phyu toiled in the paddy fields to financially support the family. Her meager salary was not enough, and soon they fell into deep debt. A woman living in the same village then approached Ma Phyu and told her of a job opportunity in China looking after the elderly. Ma Phyu was promised a salary of 400,000 kyats a month (about 200 USD). This lady had also previously sent Ma Phyu’s younger sister, Ma Nyo, to China about six months ago. Soon, this woman came to Ma Phyu with 1,500,000 kyats. She gave Ma Phyu 700,000 kyats, while the remaining 800,000 kyats was for Ma Phyu’s transport to China. Ma Phyu was sent to China in a car and five days later, she arrived at an elderly Chinese man’s house. The following day, another Chinese man came to take her. This Chinese man had a food stall in the local market. Ma Phyu had to work at his food stall. On top of this, Ma Phyu was made to perform regular sexual duties. Sometimes, Ma Phyu was also beaten. Ma Phyu recounted that she fell into hell. One day while she was at the market, Ma Phyu accidentally ran into her sister, Ma Nyo. The two sisters then planned an escape and swiftly executed their plan the following day. But to their dismay, the driver who was supposed to help them escape drove the two sisters back to where Ma Nyo worked. When morning came, yet another Chinese man came and took Ma Phyu away. This Chinese man was not of sound mind. He imprisoned Ma Phyu in his house and did not give her food regularly. He also beat her every day. Ma Phyu was also forced to perform sexual duties. Then one day, Ma Phyu woke up from her sleep feeling scorching heat. She had a frightening shock when she saw flames surrounding her. She soon realized that her entire body had been tied up with a rope. She cried for help but no one heard her. She then saw a glimpse of the elderly Chinese man in the flames, but soon after lost consciousness. When Ma Phyu regained consciousness, she was in the hospital but did not know who had brought her there. She felt her entire body was burning. While her right ear was partially burnt, her entire left ear had been completely burned away. The burns also caused her jaw and shoulder to melt and join. She also suffered severe burns on the rest of her upper body. About seven months into her hospital stay and while she was sleeping, some people took Ma Phyu and discarded her at a rubbish dump. She went without food and water for two days. Her wounds became infested with maggots. Fortunately, Ma Phyu was found by Chinese officials. She was taken to a center providing care for trafficked women. She received medical treatment for two months before she was sent back to her home in the village.

The Yangon Women Fellowship organization then received the responsibility of providing help to Ma Phyu. We filed a police case for her. We arranged medical treatment for Ma Phyu’s burn injuries, provided support for her physical and mental well-being, and also gave her food. This responsibility was not made easy as the COVID-19 situation in Burma became unstable. But by the grace of God, I was able to raise enough funds and managed to find a doctor who could treat Ma Phyu. We did everything that we could and gave our all, but two days before we could bring her to the doctor, she vomited blood and eventually died. We were saddened that we were not able to help Ma Phyu until the very end. Though she was not a believer, she received comfort and joy in her last days spent with our volunteers.

REFLECT

The Lord invites us in Psalm 82:3-4 to help those who need our help, the poor and those no one is helping. Let’s align ourselves to how Jesus responded to those who needed help.
Let us examine our attitudes towards those who need help.

How many times have we steered clear of helping those who truly needed our help?
Why are we procrastinating? Are we living as if injustice is no threat to us?
Have we forgotten the needy because we are living peaceful and comfortable lives?
Will you stand up for righteousness and seek justice for them?

PRAYER FOR THE READER

Dear God, all of us are Your creation. We are created in Your Image, so we have the same worth and are worthy of the same opportunities and privileges. As members of Christ, let us cry and suffer along with those who are crying and suffering. Please enable us to help alleviate their suffering. Give us light in our hearts and grant us strength so that we will not just speak out on injustice with our mouths, but seek justice with our actions and stand with those who are treated unjustly. In Christ Jesus’ Name we pray. Amen.
