THANKING AND PRAISING GOD

Philippians 4:6 – “In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.” (WEB)

I am a very ordinary person. But God loves me very much. I want to share with you an unforgettable experience. One day I got a call from my husband telling me that someone would visit me at home and I should be waiting for her. I knew right away it was the woman with whom he was having an affair. As a wife, it felt like my heart was on fire. I had no energy to meet this woman. I went to a friend’s house and asked her to help me. My plan was to call the police to deal with my husband and that woman according to the Burmese law. I felt worn-out and rundown. I prayed to God to give me strength to face this woman. God answered me right away — “The One who is on your side is greater than those with them.” I prayed all the way as I walked home. When I got home, they were already there. Once I stepped into the house, a miraculous thing happened. I felt this power enveloping me, flowing from the top of my head and spreading to every part of my body. Then and there all the worries left me and regenerated as extraordinary power. My plan was one thing, but God’s plan was another.

I sat in front of them. The woman opened her mouth to talk. I gestured to her to stop and told her I would talk first. The words that came out of my mouth was a scripture found in 1Thessalonians 5:18, “In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus toward you.” Then, I prayed and praised God right there. I started talking to this woman and asked her what her name was, if she had a husband and children, where she lived, what circumstances she was in, and what was wrong in her life. Among the answers that she gave me, she also said, “I am a Christian.” I replied in Burmese language, “Some Christians can do things like that.” I am not a Christian. I am a child of God. Then, I asked her, “What did Christ do to the woman who committed adultery?” She replied, “I don’t know.” I asked her again, “ When Jesus wrote on the ground, ‘He who is without sin cast the first stone,’ who cast the stone?” She replied the same, “I don’t know.” I told her, “Just as Jesus did not condemn that woman who committed adultery, I do not condemn you either. The judgment belongs to our Father God. Go home! Be the wife that prays for your husband. Be the mother that gives what is good to your children.” I took her to the bus station. Once she got home, she called me and said, “Sister, it would have been easier for me to bear it if you slapped me with your sandals. Now, my heart is stabbed and shattered.” She cried and asked for my forgiveness. Later, we became sisters in Christ. With what I know, I shared the word of God with her on the Internet. Now, her family is loving towards one another. Most importantly, they also know the Living God. The ugly that turned beautiful was not because of me. It was God’s great miraculous work in my life. In situations that are painful and worrisome, if we stand on the promises of God and praise Him, He could transform our pain and worries into power, praises, and glory.

REFLECT

In good times, our hearts sing praises joyfully. But in hard times, it is very difficult to turn our hearts to sing praises to God. It is important to remember praising God is not a feeling, but a choice. Praise is powerful. It connects us with divine power. It ushers God’s presence into our situations. Praising God brings miracles, deliverance, and victory.

What are the ways you can thank and praise God? How often do you praise God each day?

For what specific blessings do you need to praise God today? What sort of challenges are trying to convince you not to praise God? What choices will you make today?

PRAYER FOR THE READER

Dear God, please bless Your children reading this devotional journal. I pray that You will grant them wisdom when they have to face turmoil in their family situations and relationships. Help them to find You in distress and receive the power that comes from You. Fill their mouth with Your powerful, wise words and let their light shine in the darkness. Because their mouths praise You and pray to you continually, may they find deliverance from any temptation and trial that come their way. May You lift them high because they know Your Name. In Jesus’ Name I pray. Amen.
