Week 15

PRESERVE OUR LIFE AMONG THE LIVING

God let us go through the fire and the waters and bring us to the place of abundance.

Psalm 66:9(a) – “Preserve our life among the living.” (NIV)

We praise God for miraculously delivering us through difficult life experiences. I want to share my testimony regarding the challenging ordeals I experienced. But, first and foremost, I would like to share three scriptures given to me by the three people I love dearly, who are no longer on this earth. My father, Rev. Johnny Htoo, gave me Romans 12:12 – “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.” My mother, Thramu Starry J. Htoo, gave me Proverbs 31:30(b) – “…a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.” And my life partner, Dr. Simon, gave me Proverbs 3:5(a) – “Trust in the Lord with all your heart.” Right before he went home to be with the Lord, he asked us to tell all of our people to put God first. Although my loved ones are gone, the scriptures they gave me are my weapons, strength, and power that carry me through each day.

The first experience I want to share took place in July, 1991. There was a severe storm that caused destruction of our school. Our friends abroad sent us donations to buy food and replace books and items that were lost. The second experience happened on January 29, 1997. The Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA) invaded our refugee camp and there was a battle for a short time. Two people died because of the explosion of a rifle grenade. The third experience followed on April 28, 2012. A fire broke out and there was nothing left of our Kawthoolei Karen Baptist Bible School and College (KKBBSC). Although we lost everything, no life was lost by God’s grace. The fourth experience was the loss of my husband, Dr. Simon, who was called home by his heavenly father, on August 2, 2015. He peacefully left the Bible school, his people, and his family that he loved so dearly. For our family, the loving tie that bound us together broke and we felt a deep sense of loss and loneliness in tears for days and nights. We are grateful to leaders and brothers and sisters from all over the world for praying for us and sending us generous donations. May the Lord bless you abundantly.

Now I live in Arkansas with my middle child, Thaw Poe, her husband, Poe Si, and their daughter, Cha Koo Ku. Cha Koo Ku’s parents go to work early in the morning. There are times when I would still be in bed feeling lonesome and heavy. Then I would hear the footsteps of Cha Koo Ku, only three years old, running to my room. She would shout out, “Pee Pee Htoo” and that would bring me joy and take away the heaviness. I would get up and kiss her. We always eat fried rice with eggs for breakfast. We pray together. She recites Bible verses and sings. She is active and happy all day long. Sometimes, I cry and she laughs so I don’t want to cry anymore. I think God wipes away our tears in so many ways. Now, I have two more grandchildren, Thaw Thaw’s son and Paw Paw’s daughter. I learned from babies that they cry out when they need something and their mother fulfills their needs and they get quiet. Likewise, I know God is meeting my needs. He preserves my life among the living. The Lord gives me joy in ways that no humans can.

REFLECT

Everyone experiences losses in their lives. When we lose our homes, possessions, safety, and especially our loved ones, may we remember that God preserves our lives among the living and turns our sorrow and worries into comfort and strength. We also need to encourage others, especially our children. May we love them and hug them with the word of God. May we continually pray for them, so “our sons in their youth will be like well-nurtured plants, and our daughters will be like pillars carved to adorn a palace.”  (Psalm 144:12)

The gifts of three scriptures encourage Moe Htoo. Which scriptures encourage you the most?
Moe Htoo feels comforted through her grandchildren. In what ways do you feel comforted?
Have you testified of God’s miraculous work in your life for His glory?

PRAYER FOR THE READER

Father in heaven, I pray that You will bring comfort to Your children, who are reading this devotional, and whisper to them with Your gentle voice. May You be their comforter just as You comfort me through my three grandchildren and friends, who love me and pray for me. If Your children are experiencing unbearable suffering or losses, please send your angel to bring them peace and comfort, just so one day they can share with others the miraculous work You have done in their lives. In Jesus’ Name, I pray. Amen.
