DARKNESS THAT ENGULFS US

1 Peter 5:8 – “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” (NIV)

One of the challenges for our Karen people would be the practice of witchcraft and divination. Something once happened in my village when I was seven years old. My mother had a cousin named Saw Eh Plah, who worked in Kawthaung for many years. During those years, he didn’t once return to his parents and relatives. But one day, Saw Eh Plah flew back to Yangon. Saw Eh Plah saw one of his nieces and said, “I have nothing in my stomach. I’m hungry. It’s not me inside my body. It is someone else.” Saw Eh Plah appeared abnormal and acted strangely. His eyes looked bright. He seemed to be someone else. He briefly stayed in Yangon. When it was time to eat, my uncle told Saw Eh Plah, “This food is for you.” When Saw Eh Plah heard this, he said to ‘someone,’ “Get out!” Whenever people prayed, Saw Eh Plah became restless. Eventually, Saw Eh Plah returned to our village. The roads leading to our village become inaccessible to cars during the rainy season so walking was the only option. Saw Eh Plah made his way to the village on foot. When he arrived at the village entrance, he suddenly could no longer walk. His feet buckled and he fell flat on his face. He also couldn’t see anything so people had to carry him into the village. He stayed at one uncle’s house. He became easily frightened. One Friday evening, Saw Eh Plah wrapped himself in a blanket and he looked like he was going to levitate. When he laid flat, he appeared like a corpse. He had to be kept watch over every night. Not long after that Saw Eh Plah’s older brother, Saw Tha Taw, also became affected by this darkness and it started to slowly consume him. One Sunday, Saw Tha Taw told Saw Eh Plah, “I have to take you home for a cure. The old pastor told me to cure you as well.” However, there was no such old pastor around. Our church pastor heard about this matter so he went to pray for Saw Eh Plah. When the pastor started praying, Saw Eh Plah started convulsing and his face reddened. He returned to normal only when the prayer ended with “Amen.”  When Saw Eh Plah returned to Saw Tha Taw’s house, Saw Tha Taw told him to vomit, flex his legs, take a shower and change into new clothes. After that, they burned Saw Eh Plah’s clothes. When his clothes were being burned, Saw Eh Plah became agitated and people had to hold him back. At the same time, Saw Tha Taw appeared to hallucinate and he uttered, “I have tied you with ten thousand ropes.” (But no one actually saw the rope and only Saw Tha Taw appeared to be able to see this.) Saw Tha Taw then turned his back so he was no longer facing Saw Eh Plah. As the others were holding back a shaking Saw Eh Plah, Saw Tha Taw kicked his heel and blew out air. Next, Saw Tha Taw commanded Saw Eh Plah to “Toss away your sickness at the front gate and into the darkness.”  Saw Eh Plah did as he was told but it took him a while before he returned to the house. Saw Tha Taw was then on the second floor of the house when he called out to Saw Eh Plah “Why are you not entering the house? Do you want to be like that person who is outside?” Saw Eh Plah responded, “I’m coming.”  Then Saw Eh Plah entered the house and sat down, Saw Tha Taw once again started hallucinating and said, “Oh, the ropes are broken.” The two of them started fighting each other with Kungfu-like moves. Eventually, Saw Eh Plar collapsed and immediately, Saw Tha Taw took an axe and started chopping away at Saw Eh Plar’s throat, as if slaughtering a pig. When Saw Eh Plar’s legs started moving, Saw Tha Taw took the axe to Saw Eh Plar’s heels. Saw Tha Taw handed himself over to the authorities that same night. The two brothers used to be so loving before but it tragically ended with the older brother murdering the younger brother. Before Saw Eh Plar returned to the village, Saw Tha Taw was just a normal person. The terrifying change began with the return of Saw Eh Plah. Until this day, none of us has been able to comprehend this terrifying event. Perhaps what I am sharing may be baffling to most, but we saw the events unfold with our own eyes. Evidently, it is not only physical matters, but also spiritual darkness that can devour us. So let’s get closer to God! Let the Holy Spirit fill us so we can overcome both our physical and spiritual enemies. Be alert!

REFLECT

There is a reason why we fear the devil and his  darkness. It is not baseless. The devil is powerful, so powerful that we are unable to comprehend the intensity of it. The devil is always prowling, looking for someone to devour. So how can we defeat the devil with our own might? We can only fight with the power of God. Jesus himself overcame the devil. Demons were afraid of Jesus and he drove them out of a man into a herd of swine.

Is there a need for you now to break free from the power of darkness? Is there a darkness inside of you that needs to be driven out? How will you be able to stand firm and be alert when the devil fights you? Let us be watchful and pray for those who are battling such darkness in their lives. For the Word of God says, “I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” (Luke 10:19-20)

PRAYER FOR THE READER

Dear God, please bless Your children reading this devotional journal. Father, we have to face such diverse and difficult situations during our time on earth. We know that we have to talk to You so that the devil will not engulf us. You have given the devil power so he is prowling around looking for someone to devour. Please protect Your children who have been disturbed by the devil. Please do not let the power of such evil darkness touch them. Please enter the hearts of Your children who have been affected, take control of their lives and fill them with Your power, Your holiness and goodness. Please defeat the devil once and for all, as soon as possible.  In Jesus’ Name, I pray. Amen.
