Week 38

The LORD ANSWERED MY CALL FOR HELP

Jeremiah 33:3 – “Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know” (NIV)

The LORD did an incredible thing for me during a particularly difficult hardship. Our family lived in Tham Hin refugee camp, one of the most ‘closed’ camps on the border. We faced countless obstacles. To the best of my ability, I did my utmost to raise my five children despite the harsh living conditions. We always had to be on guard and be wary of everything. There was no way we could move freely because of the cramped conditions, much less travel in and out of the camp without fuss. If the Thai soldiers found us, they would imprison us or even send us away to somewhere really remote. We always had to be cautious even when we wanted to buy something to eat. Many times, I felt like I was living in a prison. I longed for a day when I could move freely wherever I wanted without having to fear for my safety.

One day, my cousin and I went out of the camp to purchase some food and basic necessities at a Thai Karen village called ‘Terkawlah.’ Before we set off, my cousin reminded me that we should pray. As such, we bowed our heads together in prayer. We soon arrived safely at ‘Terkawlah.’ When morning came, we made our way to the marketplace without much thought. The border guards we came across searched us and even then, we did not think much of it. After purchasing what we had to buy, we returned and had our meal. We then bowed our heads to pray. Many of our fellow refugees from Tham Hin were also there at this marketplace and some of us returned to the refugee camp. On our journey back to the camp, some of us took the mountain route. And when we were really close to the camp, we received information that the Thai soldiers had caught many of our fellow refugees and had put them under the scorching sun. We were also told  there were Thai soldiers waiting at the foot of the mountain in order to catch us. I was overwhelmed with worry for my five young children back inside the refugee camp. If I chose not to return to the camp, my children would have to face a huge problem. I did not know what to think or do. At that moment, I saw a big bamboo tree so I climbed it and started to pray desperately, “LORD, please send heavy rains so that the Thai soldiers who are lying in wait to catch us will no longer be able to do so and have no choice but to leave.” But there were no clouds in the sky and it was scorching hot. But after a while, dark clouds started to gather and it rained so heavily that the river leading to Tham Hin refugee camp was bursting at its seams. Not long after that, we received news that the Thai soldiers had left so we were able to return to Tham Hin refugee camp. I was so relieved to be able to see my children again. We managed to escape this sticky situation with the Thai soldiers.

I was really astounded that God answered my plea to Him for help. It is not a mere coincidence. The LORD had most definitely answered the call of a lowly and desperate person like me. I thank the LORD for hearing my prayer and this is my testimony to the readers of this devotional journal that God exists and He hears our prayers. He will answer your prayer without hesitation at the right moment.

REFLECT

The LORD delivers His children from challenging and frightening situations. We have learned from the biblical examples of Daniel in the lion’s den and Jonah being swallowed by a big fish that they were saved by God’s grace alone. As we read Naw Lu Dee’s testimony today, we are once again reminded of our LORD’s deliverance of His children until this day. Most importantly, our LORD delivers us from eternal death.

Are you presently trapped inside a lion’s den? Are you running away from God like Jonah? Or are you going through harsh living conditions like Naw Lu Dee? Continue to pray.  When your faith is deeply rooted in Him, the LORD will be with you just like He was with Daniel in the lion’s den, Jonah inside the belly of a big fish, and Naw Lu Dee in confinement. He will deliver you from your bondages now and forever.

PRAYER FOR THE READER

Dear God, please bless Your children reading this devotional journal. I pray that You will answer Your children’s call to You when they face difficulties. May Your children put their trust in You alone when they are faced with worries in their times of need. When they are at their wits’ end and there is no help available, please remind them that You are greater than the worries of this world. Please help Your children see that You are their hope alone. Hold on to Your Children’s hands tightly when they are weak in spirit. May Your children’s journeys bring glory to You. In Jesus’ Name, I pray. Amen.
