Week 36

COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS & GIVE THANKS

2 Samuel 22:3-4 – “My God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation. He is my stronghold, my refuge and my savior – from violent people you save me. I called to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and have been saved from my enemies.” (NIV)

My parents were from Brigade 5. I was born there in March 1963. When I was about six years old, our family moved to Brigade 3. I grew up there and was baptized at Htee Lo Poe Ta Church in Gaw Hsaw Hti. In 1973 when I was about 10 years old, problems started to appear for us. Our foe, the Myanmar army began to terrorize us by killing villagers and destroying our land. Their diverse ways of killing our villagers were brutal and savage. It was extremely terrifying. We had to run for our lives into the thick jungle and many times we went without food or water. There are times when we had to collect water with plastic sheets when it rained. Other times, we collected water from potholes and used it for cooking. Sometimes, the water was red so when we used it to cook our rice, it would turn black. While on the run from the Burmese army, we could not talk loudly either. Instead, we had to talk in whispers as the Burmese army was shooting not too far away from us. My dad was a prayerful man and he prayed day and night. He put his faith in God and I believe that because of his prayers, we were able to avoid getting shot and killed by the Burmese army day after day. As I look at the present unrest and challenging situation in our homeland, I recall my childhood days when I went through similar circumstances. Back there, we were pretty much helpless and we had nowhere to turn to. Back then, the enemy could only chase us on foot. They were not able to hunt us down using planes. I believe our brothers and sisters back in our homeland now are facing an even greater adversity because of the enemy planes. At the same time, it is a blessing that more help seems to be available these days.

After having six children, we faced a serious health problem. I was suffering from dysentery and there was blood in my stool. By then, we were living in a refugee camp. There were a few of us who had the same health issue including my own husband and children. By God’s grace, I was only unwell for two days and was able to recover enough to look after my children. But my husband had to suffer for two long months. I did not get much sleep looking after my husband. There wasn’t anyone who came to offer help to us. Even my own siblings and parents stayed away. This was because this illness was not curable in the refugee camp and communicable. So, everyone was afraid. However, God sent help in the form of a church elder. This church elder came by every day to check on my family and to pray over us. The church elder saw that my husband was no longer in a good condition so he searched and found a military doctor who was able to treat my husband successfully. My husband’s health soon returned and he was able to walk.

I believe God saved us. I am always thankful and praise God for his grace and blessings upon me. If not for His mercy, my children would have lost their father and I would be a widow.

REFLECT

Research has shown that practicing gratitude as a habit increases happiness and improves physical health. Researchers found that the quality of sleep improved, the immune system got stronger, and health problems decreased. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 tells us, “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

How are you going to count your blessings and give thanks today like Aunty Ler M00?
Is there someone you are grateful to and would like to call and express your gratitude?
What are three ways you can be a blessing to someone today?

PRAYER FOR THE READER

Dear Lord, Please bless Your children reading this devotional journal. Father, You are their rock, their Lord, their refuge, their shield, their savior, their stronghold, their shelter, the One Who saves them from their enemies. You have not forsaken them. You have carried them even until today. Help them to count Your plentiful blessings that overflow like sand. Thank you! May Your children be thankful and praise Your Name. Anoint them, teach them, correct their ways and make use of them. In Jesus’ Name, I pray. Amen.
